How I Turn Off Comments on a Facebook Post

Hey, so listen.
If you’ve ever posted something on Facebook and then immediately regretted letting everyone and their cousin jump into your comment section… yeah, same.

Good news is, I figured out how to turn off comments, and it’s not rocket science.
I’m gonna walk you through it like you’re sitting right next to me.

Let’s go.

TL;DR — How to Turn Off Comments on a Facebook Post

  • In Facebook Groups:
    • Tap the three dots (…) on your post → Tap “Turn off commenting.”
  • On Your Profile:
    • Tap three dots (…) → Tap “Who can comment?” → Choose “Only me” to basically turn comments off.
  • If You Just Hate One Comment:
    • Hold your finger on the comment → Tap Delete.
  • Important Stuff:
    • Turning off comments doesn’t delete old ones.
    • You can turn comments back on later.
    • People can still react with likes, hearts, angry faces, etc.

Bottom line: Your post, your rules. Shut it down if people get annoying.

First Things First: Can I Always Turn Off Comments?

Here’s the deal:
You can only turn off comments in some places on Facebook.

I can turn off comments if:

  • I post something in a Facebook group (and I have permission).
  • I post something on my own profile (but it’s a little trickier — I have to limit who can comment).
  • I post something on a Page that I manage.

I CAN’T just shut off comments on any random post everywhere.
(Facebook is weird like that. Honestly, they could’ve made this way easier.)

How I Turn Off Comments (Step-by-Step)

When I Post in a Facebook Group:

  1. I find my post inside the group.
  2. I tap the three little dots (…) at the top right corner of my post.
  3. A menu pops up.
  4. I tap “Turn off commenting.”

Boom.
Now nobody can type anything underneath it. They can still hit “like” or “heart” or whatever, but no typing.

When I Post on My Own Profile:

Okay, this one’s a little different.

Technically, Facebook doesn’t let me totally “turn off” comments on my own posts — unless I use the “Who can comment” setting.

Here’s what I do:

StepWhat I Tap
1Go to my post.
2Tap the three dots (…) in the top right corner.
3Tap “Who can comment on your post?”
4Pick: Public, Friends, or Only me.

Shortcut:
If I pick “Only me,” it’s basically the same thing as turning comments off.

Quick Picture Guide (In My Head)

It kinda looks like this:

Why I Might Turn Off Comments

Honestly, sometimes I just don’t feel like dealing with people.

Here’s why I usually hit that “turn off commenting” button:

ReasonExample
Avoid fightsPosted about my favorite team and didn’t want a war in the comments
Stop spamSome random dude kept dropping crypto links
Stay privatePosted a photo I didn’t want the whole town talking about
Keep it cleanRunning a group and avoiding drama

Stuff I Always Keep in Mind

  • Turning off comments doesn’t delete old ones.
If someone already said something weird, it’s still there unless I delete it manually.
  • I can turn comments back ON anytime.
Just go back to the three dots and tap “Turn on commenting.”
  • People can still react with emojis.
They can’t shut up, but they can still throw an angry face or a heart on my post. (Classic.)

Bonus Trick: How I Delete Just One Comment

If I don’t want to shut everybody up, but I need to erase one annoying comment, here’s what I do:

  1. I hold my finger on the comment.
  2. I tap Delete.

Just like that — gone. 🧹

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, it’s my post.
I get to decide if people can say stuff or not.

If they’re being trolls, stirring drama, or just annoying me… guess what? Comments: OFF.

“Not every post needs to be a public debate.”
